Big Texan Steak Ranch, Amarillo, Texas
The Big Texan Steak Ranch is truly legendary. Dating from the glory days of old Route 66, this place refused to die when the old Mother Road was bypassed. Instead, they simply moved their restaurant to where the traffic moved (now I-40). Business is still brisk, and they've got a tempting offer: Eat all of their 72-oz steak dinner (that's four-and-a-half pounds!) within one hour and it's free. But take heed: you're expected to also finish off the salad, appetizer, potato, dessert, etc. in order to qualify for a "win." Lots of folks have accomplished the feat, and lots more have failed while enjoying the feast.
And don't forget to check out the gift shop. They've got Texas souvenirs to please and a live rattlesnake to boot.
The Big Texan Steak Ranch is on the north side of I-40 near the eastern outskirts of Amarillo.
