Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo, Texas
Amarillo is on the former Route 66 in the Panhandle region of Texas. Circa 1974, an artist troupe calling themselves the Ant Farm erected an unusual work of art in a field on the outskirts of town. Dubbed "Cadillac Ranch," it consists of a row of vintage Caddies buried nose-first in the soil. Together, they trace the evolution of some of the more well-recognized tailfins ever to grace Detroit iron. It is said that the angle at which they sit matches the slopes of the Great Pyramids at Giza.
Believe it or not, the whole works was moved in recent years to a different field due to encroaching development. However, it can still be seen from I-40 on the western outskirts of town, still on the south side of the highway. Pull over (on the service road please), and don't forget the camera!
The city of Amarillo is an old Route 66 town, with plenty of vintage roadside architecture.
