Ghost Town of Calico

In the desert of southern California, not far from historic Route 66, sits the old mining town of Calico. Converted many years ago into an old-west-style tourist attraction, the Ghost Town of Calico has been used in several film productions thanks to its circa-1881 flavor. Approximately one-third of the buildings are said to be original, with the remainder being faithful reproductions of period architecture.

The Calico Spring Festival in May includes a chili cookoff and the World Tobacco Spitting Championship. Each October, Calico Days features a parade, burro races, and the National Gunfight Championship.

The postcard reproduced at right is of 1960 vintage.
