Chaco Culture National Historical Park
Chaco is part of the Four Corners region of the southwestern U.S., containing ruins of the so-called Anasazi culture, whose present-day descendants include the Hopi and Zuni peoples. Chaco Canyon, in northwestern New Mexico, is a classic example.
Chaco is a bit isolated, being some 60 miles from the nearest town. Start early and pack a lunch (don't forget drinking water). There are dozens of sites to visit, plus trails to hike.
Directions: from the north (recommended approach), turn off NM44 at county road 7900, about 3 miles east of Nageezi. The route is clearly marked, but from the turnoff to the park is 21 miles, about 16 of which are unpaved.
