Corn Palace, Mitchell, South Dakota

Mitchell, South Dakota's famous Corn Palace is actually the third in a series of exhibition halls first established in 1892. The current structure, at 601 N Main St, was built in 1921.

The exterior surfaces of the Corn Palace are a series of murals composed of native agricultural products such as wheat, corn, and other grains and grasses. Each year, the entire building is stripped and then covered anew, so that every year its appearance is unique.

The vintage postcard below depicts the corn palace as it appeared for the 1966 season.

Mitchell is located on I-90 in southeastern South Dakota, about 65 miles west of Sioux Falls.
