Cozy Dog Drive-In, Springfield, Illinois
Located on old Route 66 in the town of Springfield, Illinois is a cornerstone of mid-twentieth-century American culture. The late Ed Waldmire Jr invented the corn dog while stationed in Amarillo during the war (ca. 1943). When he came home, he started a small chain of restaurants specializing in his new concoction, which he originally called "Crusty Curs." A lot has changed since the place opened in the post-war 1940s, but this venerable Route 66 fixture in the heart of the Land of Lincoln is still in the family.
Springfield is in central Illinois, at the crossroads of Interstates 55 & 72.
