Gateway Arch, St Louis, Missouri

Soaring some 630 feet above the nearby Mississippi River, the Gateway Arch is an internationally-recognized symbol of St. Louis and its role in America's westward expansion. Designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, the stainless steel creation was completed in 1965 and features a unique internal elevator which can transport you to the viewing area near the apex.

The arch-gateway-portal motif certainly is fitting, symbolizing as it does Missouri's historical role as the last bastion of civilization, through which travelers exploring and populating the West traditionally passed.

St Louis, Missouri is on the Mississippi River and is accessible via Interstates 44 and 70. You won't have trouble finding the arch; it's the most visible landmark in town, and near the downtown waterfront.
