Giant Cross at Groom
If you're traveling along Interstate 40 through the panhandle of Texas, you're also traveling in the shadow of the famous Route 66. Aside from the city of Amarillo, you might think that there's not very much to see in the vicinity.
But, wait! Slow down as you pass through the town of Groom, and you just might see something a little out of the ordinary. Alongside the highway, quite visible if you're on the lookout, is a gigantic cross. The Groom cross was only recently constructed (it doesn't even approach the era of Route 66 travel), but it does constitute a modern-day attempt at luring the jaded traveler off the pavement.
Groom is on Route 66, approximately forty miles east of Amarillo.
