Guthrie: Territorial Capital of Oklahoma

The city of Guthrie served as Oklahoma's capital during its years as a Territory, and for its initial few years after attaining Statehood in 1907. That means that Guthrie's stock was highest during Oklahoma's days as Indian Territory, and the town takes that heritage very seriously.

Downtown contains the largest urban historical district on the national register, including over 2,000 structures in 400 city blocks on 1400 acres. These buildings were constructed between the Land Run of 1889 and the removal of the capital to Oklahoma City in 1910. The photo below was taken in the downtown Victorian section during December, when the city celebrates what they refer to as A Territorial Christmas.

The town of Guthrie, Oklahoma is north of the present capital, OKC, via US highway 77.
