Meramec Caverns

Avid spelunkers probably already know about Meramec Caverns, Missouri. Missouri is famous for its caves, with over 5400 registered ones at last count. Lester Dill began promoting his Meramec Caverns in the 1930s by having barns all over the midwest painted with the name of his caves, many of which still remain. The caves are said to have functioned as a hideout for Jesse James and his gang when they were robbing banks in the area in the nineteenth century. Meramec Caverns became a must-see attraction in the heyday of Route 66 travel.

Meramec Caverns is located just a few miles south of Stanton, Missouri, via highway W.
