Mount Rainier National Park

Mount Rainier National Park was established in 1899, and is named for one of the most-photographed mountain peaks in the United States. The mountain itself is covered with some 35 square miles of ice in 26 named glaciers. Hiking and climbing are the most popular pursuits.

At right is a reproduction of part of a travel publication dated July 15, 1918. The Mentor is of course long extinct, but some of the wisdom it expounded is still meaningful today. The magazine exhorts us to "Learn One Thing Every Day" and to "Make the Spare Moment Count."

The park is located in western Washington state, about 80 miles south of Seattle.
