Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area
Established in 1972, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area stretches along some forty miles of coastline between Coos Bay and Florence. There are several well-marked trailheads offering ocean views, horseback riding, camping areas, guided nature walks, and even outfitters specializing in dune-buggy excursions. Self-guided trails range from 0.5 to 6.0 miles round-trip, so there's something for everyone.
Be forewarned, though, that hiking in loose sand is strenuous—expect any given distance to require about twice the time (and effort!) as the same distance on flat, hard ground.
Reedsport, Oregon has a 24-hour visitor center with plenty of maps and literature. During office hours, the staff will help you plan your visit by pointing out where to access the trails and other features that interest you.
