Painted Desert & Petrified Forest
These two gems are located in northeastern Arizona, just east of the town of Holbrook, and are accessible from I-40. Both offer spectacular scenery, plenty of hiking trails, and both are steeped in vacation tradition.
The Painted Desert is particularly stunning in the morning or evening hours, when the low rays of the sun accentuate the wide array of natural colors in the rocks. The Petrified Forest contains not only naturally-occurring fallen logs which have been transformed into semi-precious stone, but also some man-made structures which were constructed of the plentiful material in the dim past.
Both parks are located just off old Route 66.
