San Antonio Riverwalk
People all over the world know that San Antonio is home to one of Texas' most prized and revered shrines--the Alamo. What most of them don't know until they actually visit the city is that San Antonio's most universally-beloved jewel is the Riverwalk.
Originating in 1914 and then redesigned and expanded in 1939-41, San Antonio's Riverwalk is a pedestrian's delight. The San Antonio River (really no more than a spring at this point) takes a sweeping curve through downtown, and is lined along both sides with walkways, gardens, cafes, hotels, and museums. What's really amazing is that over the years, the Riverwalk has been expanded and upgraded, but has essentially retained its WPA-era flavor along most of its original expanse.
Take a tour of the district via water taxi. They're clean, quiet, and the guide will point out some features you'd surely miss on your own.
San Antonio's Riverwalk is smack dab in the central business district. A short walk will even take you to the Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo).
