The Tinkertown Museum, Sandia Park, NM
It is with great pleasure that we bring to ExitHere.net a true Roadside Attraction from the Old School: Tinkertown. The Tinkertown Museum is the labor of love of one man, Ross Ward, who for decades has carved and whittled and assembled Tinkertown out of the materials at hand. The building itself is built largely of thousands of bottles held together with mortar, and inside are literally thousands of hand carved models depicting everthing from circuses to ragtime bands to the Afterlife, many of which are animated.
A sign painter by profession, Mr Ross has sprinkled the grounds of Tinkertown liberally with gems of wisdom from such minds as Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt, and Will Rogers. But one of my personal favorites comes from Ross himself: "I did all this while you were watching TV."
Sadly, we learned during our own trip there (July 2001) that Mr Ward now suffers from failing health. Being a family-owned and operated enterprise, this places the future of Tinkertown in some question.
Tinkertown, and the town of Sandia Park, New Mexico, are just east of Albuquerque on the Turquoise Trail.
