U Drop Inn, Shamrock, Texas
If you're not expecting it—and perhaps even if you are!—driving up upon the U Drop Inn is a jolt to the senses. Sporting two distinct Deco-inspired towers, the former fueling station/restaurant was designed by John Nunn in 1936, reportedly by first drawing the design in the dirt with a nail. The place went out of business a number of years ago, but a concerted effort has been underway to save the structure and convert it to other uses.
At the time this photograph was taken, in 1993, the U Drop Inn was playing host to a Classic Cadillac Car Owners Club meeting.
Shamrock, Texas is located on old Route 66 (now I-40) just west of the Oklahoma state line.
