Grand Canyon Caverns
If you're a spelunker (or even if you're not), don't even think about failing to stop in at the Grand Canyon Caverns as you pass through northern Arizona on Route 66. This is an authentic roadside attraction, having been a fixture on the fabled highway for decades. I have a road map from the 1940s which has the location clearly marked, although at that time is was known as Coconino Caverns. The caverns are accessed via an elevator which takes you some twenty-one stories beneath the surface. Tours run about 45 minutes, and include a mummified bobcat. Restaurant, campground, gift shop—and even an airstrip—are available here.
Grand Canyon Caverns are located in northwestern Arizona, on old Route 66 (now Arizona State Hwy 66) east of Peach Springs.
